What is "THE DENTED CAN" ?
What up at de CAN?
Several years ago I (Doug Nye) had an opportunity to purchase a Sweedish box car from the local Tourist railroad company as they were interested in putting their energies into passenger cars to use for the scenic excursions that was their bread and butter. This RR box car came up for sale and being a musician I jumped at the opportunity to purchase it and repurpose it as a music performance/gallery space.
THE CAN , as it is affectionatly called, had three years of operation until the societal upheaval that nearly killed the music industry and every other small venture nearly destroyed the Dream. Made of steal and iron, THE CAN withstood this assault unscathed and undeterred
Up till that point THE CAN operated on an underground basis as the RR car sat on a friends tracks and we had no insurance and I was concerned about protecting his interests from some frivolous law suit. This being the case THE CAN operated as an almost exclusive club as we never did widespread advertizing and was only attended by the "cool kids" and locals who had the opportunity to see some great talent in this intimate setting
For 3 years THE CAN had lain dormant until recently when we obtained an actual lease on the state owned RR track and have secured real insurance coverage. SOoooooo... this is the year THE CAN will blosom with regular shows with actual strangers (soon to be friends) attending.
Booking an Event? or Want to attendan event?
The Dented Can operates on an old school, somewhat unusual format: WE are not in it for the money!!! Weird right ???? By eliminating this quest for filthy lucre there are never any dissappointments. A tip jar will always be present so people can donate to defray the operatiing expenses of the yearly lease and insurance premiums, Keeping live music ALIVE !!
People wanting to put on a show or event contact Doug Nye , schedule a date , arrive at a ticket price, advertize the event and collect any money at the door. Often performers prefer to simply pass the proverbial hat. It is surprising how generous some people can be when using this method.
Your event will be added to the calander and included in all Dented Can advertizements and notifications on this website and the Facebook page .
THE CAN is predominantly a music venue but it is equiped with a screen and projector so that occasionally we can host movies, lectures, art shows, poetry readings or slams or whatever event one has in mind. GREAT IDEAS ALWAYS WELCOME
Always Something Going On
When we're not hosting an event, we are throwing our own parties and happenings ! It has become a DENTED CAN "hobo hangout" tradition to always have a campfire either before or after the shows where people can get to know the artists and eachother on a closer level.
Come join us every opportunity you have. Us hobos have not a care in the world and love to spin yarns and breath in smoke around a fire . Usually hot chocolate or hot dags seem to arrive
THE DENTED CAN IS MOSTLY AN ALCOHOL AND DRUG FREE VENUE
also leave your animules at home (unless your pet is an elephant. That would be wicked cool to have an elephant at the can. )
